Ashura (10th Muharram)

If you are wondering what is the day of Ashura, then Ashura refers to the 10th day of Muharram, which marks the first month of the Hijri calendar 1447(A.H). The day is also called the “Month of Allah”. This year, the Ashura date in Pakistan 2025 is 5th July 2025. Moreover, the day of Ashura marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in the Battle of Karbala.

In addition, Hussain Ibn Ali (AS) was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the proud son of Hazrat Fatima and (R) Hazrat Ali (A). Furthermore, Imam Hussain was a brave man who was strong and fought bravely with Yazid and his soldiers till his last breath in order to protect and defend Islam.

However, during this time, Yazid Ibn Muawiya became caliph with the support of his father, Caliph Muawiya. As a result, Imam Hussain and his companions refused the announcement of Yazid’s caliphate. However, Yazid still tried to convince Imam Hussain to come to his support and make an alliance with him, but Hussain Ibn Ali again refused his offer and decided to fight back against him to protect Islam and its significance.

Furthermore, as a result of constant refusal by Hussain Ibn Aali, Yazid decided to kill him and his companions. As a result of this, Imam Hussain, along with his followers, family members, were all martyred on the 10th of Muharram in Karbala, which marks the day of Ashura.

It is worth mentioning that, despite this incident, there were other events that occurred on this 10th day of Muharram, such as:

  • Allah almighty saved Prophet Musa (AS) along with the Israel people from the oppression of Pharaoh on Ashura.
  • Hazrat Nuh, along with his followers were also had a blessed life.
  • Ashura, the holy day, falls within the Sacred Month of Allah Almighty (swt)
  • A good deed, like giving charity on Ashura, is equal to the entire year’s worth of charity.
  • Qayamat will take place on the 10th day of Muharram, which will be Friday
  • On Ashura, Shia Community Muslims observe a day of mourning, remembering the pain which was given to their great leader, Hussain Ibn Ali and his family & followers.
  • The Shia community wears black clothes and takes out processions (julus) on the 10th day of Muharram.
  • On the same day, the Sunni community observes fasting on the day of Ashura and performs prayers in mosques, indicating its blessed nature.
